Over the coming weeks, as we are entering phase II of our new web site design, we will be publishing a series of posts on how we built our web site, right from sketching out the original layout to coding up the site to appear online as it does now. Why you might ask? Isn’t that just giving away too much information? In our industry, it is becoming increasingly saturated and we need to demonstrate our knowledge and expertise of an industry we are so passionate about. By educating up and coming web designers and potential clients, we feel they will gain an appreciation of the skills our agency has to offer and what really does go into a professionally designed web site.

If you’d like to read “The Making of our Web Site” posts, please subscribe to the RSS feed or check back to our blog every week or so. We hope to see you pretty some.

As a website design company we talk to a lot of potential clients who are not making the best use of the internet. Some may not even have a website at all, others just put a few token web pages up because they feel they have to have an internet presence. When we talk to some of these businesses, some people simply discard the internet as a channel to market, especially if their business is doing “OK”. We get a lot of, “Well, we get a lot of our business through word of mouth” and they simply don’t want to know……..UNTIL……we do a quick search on some potential keywords that a customer may use to search for their products or services. Most of the time, our potential client is surprised at the number of searches carried out. Then we start a business conversation.

Firstly, if they don’t have a website at all, the customers won’t know they exist, secondly, if they have a website but its not optimised to target those keywords, again, they won’t be found. Finally, if the customer does find them and their website is poor, maybe in its designs or perhaps its not clear what they offer, the prospect won’t hang around and will move on to the competition.

What, we’re saying is Don’t Knock any marketing method until you’ve given a good chance. For those of you that are already bought into the internet as a sales/marketing channel, there are always things you can do to up your game. The internet is a fast moving medium and so are your customers. You need to keep up with them both.

Happy Internet Marketing!

When it snows for any length of time, animals have to learn to deep a bit deeper to find the food they need to survive. Those that don’t will die and those that adapt well to their surroundings will not only survive, they thrive.

This is also true when the economy is slowing down or in a recession. Business is still around but you have to dig a bit deeper. If you’ve never experienced tough times in your business, this may not come naturally to you but your existance can depend on it.

Those of you that have the courage to market your business well in tough times will reap the rewards, especially if you’ve already built up a strong brand. If you haven’t, it’s not too late. But you must start NOW! There are really very few quick wins when it comes to marketing. Sure, there maybe some low hanging fruit around but all your competitors will be picking this off too.

Make sure you are feeding your pipeline by deeping as deep as you need to. You’ll uncover opportunities that you hadn’t even thought of. Make those phone calls (or get someone to do it for you, ie a telemarketing agency), write that sales letter, send out your brochure, write that blog, update your website…..the list of activities goes on……but remember, do it now as it the rewards rarely come immediately….and that’s where many fail. Have faith, have patience and market with confience and anticipation that what you do today WILL be rewarded but not just yet.

Keep digging

It never fails to amaze me that some people are so wrapped up in their coporate roles (note I did not say jobs here, subtle difference) that they just follow the masses like sheep and all common sense goes out of the window.

Now, I know that there are plently of jobs where the person(s) just have to be present to carry out their duties, however, equally there are plenty of jobs that are easily done from the comfort of your own home, sat in front of a blazing fire with a cup of tea next to you. Actually that’s exactly what I’m doing now (and I’m being very productive). Think about it.

Your customers may not be skilled in selecting the best product or service to meet their needs. They may think they do and that’s potentially dangerous. Take website design, for example. The market for website design is so competitive and saturated, its difficult for some customers to differenciate one service provider from another. They just my not know what’s important. The danger here is that they may make a decision based solely on price. If you are a website design company, competing on price alone is a risky strategy.

Education is the key to helping your customers make a more informed buying decision and help set you apart from the competitive. Again, taking the website design example a little further : Consider the objectives of the what the service needs to do for the client, for example, drive traffic, build awareness, build customer confidence, invoke an action and or response. Can all website design companies do this for their clients. Many cannot.

Education is not all one way. Sure, giving some detailed background information on your product or service is a good thing, particularly when its tied in with the benefits to the customers i.e. we build search engine friendly web sites so this means more traffic to your web site which means more……..you get the idea. But also, understanding your clients’ market and challenges will help align your services and products to their needs. Once you are both educated and aligned, you’ll do better business.

Happy Marketing!

Aligning Mindmaps

What do I mean by mindmap? In the context of marketing we mean a persons perspective on something based on their own personal experiences and belief systems. So why should we care as marketeers? Well, understanding your target audience’s mindmap is critical to understanding their needs/wants/desires/motivations. Understanding this will able you to make smart marketing decisions. You can decided that a particular customer group may simply not have a mindmap that is aligned with your offering and further more it’s so out of alignment that they just aren’t your target group of customers at all. Nothing wrong with that. However, on the other hand, understanding a customers mindmap that is only slightly out of alignment with your offering may mean you simply have to make some adjustments to your offering, or better still, adjust your marketing messages.

Take, for example, website design. Now there’s lots of people and company’s doing that. Ourselves included. We offer our services to medium sized companies, particularly those in the technology sectors. Now take a company that has not embraced the internet, has no interest in the internet and never will (yes they do exist). Their mind map is so out of alignment with our offering, they just aer not our target group.

Make sure you at least try to profile your customers mindmap (not always easy but insightful market research can help hugely). This will help you be in better alignment with your target group and consequently your marketing spend will be working harder.
